Taking the Lessons Home
What happens at Camp W doesn’t stay at Camp W. We aim to equip every camper with the confidence, knowledge, and tools they need to bring these experiences back to their own communities. Whether it’s applying newfound skills, inspiring others, or fostering a deeper connection to nature, the impact of Camp W extends far beyond the forest.
At Camp W, we don’t just teach survival—we inspire growth, connection, and a lifelong relationship with the natural world.
“I feel connected to the natural world while learning skills that I know served our ancestors since the dawn of time.”
The Six Guilds: The Heart of Camp W
The Guilds are a cornerstone of the Camp W experience, providing a framework for skill development, collaboration, and personal growth. While campers aren’t expected to master every skill within each Guild, it’s essential to approach their time with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn.
Learning, Collaboration, and Autonomy
During their time in each Guild, campers:
• Learn and develop new skills aligned with the Guild’s focus.
• Work both independently and as part of a team, contributing to group success.
• Gain confidence by overcoming challenges and achieving shared goals.
Specialization and Mastery
After completing their initial time with each Guild, campers are invited to choose a specific Guild to return to, where they can hone their skills and begin mastering their craft. This process allows campers to dive deeper into their chosen discipline, fostering expertise and a sense of purpose.
A Unified Community Project
Throughout the summer, the Guilds collaborate on a larger Community project, combining their unique skills and perspectives to create something meaningful for all. This joint effort reinforces the values of teamwork, creativity, and shared achievement that are central to the Camp W philosophy.
The Guild system at Camp W offers campers an unparalleled opportunity to explore their passions, develop life-long skills, and contribute to something greater than themselves—building both community and character along the way.

Rangers Program: Mastering Wilderness Survival
The Rangers program at Camp W offers a fully immersive wilderness experience, teaching campers to live harmoniously with the forest while mastering essential survival skills.
A Self-Sufficient Journey
Rangers spend three days in the backcountry of Mt. Solitude at The Sanctuary, a primitive site where they focus on bushcraft and self-reliance. During their time, Rangers will:
• Build Their Village: Lash logs, construct rainproof shelters, and create a communal living space.
• Master Fire Craft: Learn advanced fire-starting techniques for cooking and warmth.
• Water Skills: Collect, purify, and filter water to sustain themselves in the wild.
• Bushcraft Immersion: Develop critical survival skills to fully care for themselves in the rugged forest environment.
This program is designed for campers ready to embrace challenges, build resilience, and learn to thrive in the natural world.
Residential and Unique
The Rangers program operates independently of our base camp activities, offering a completely different set of experiences. However, Rangers still have opportunities to:
• Swim and cool off in natural waters.
• Participate in select special events with the base camp community.
Included with Ranger Registration
Each Ranger receives a fire starter, paracord, and a wilderness craft kit, essential tools for their wilderness journey and skill development.
Program Limitations
Please note that during their Ranger weeks, participants are not eligible for:
• Water-sports programs.
• Backpacking expeditions.
The Rangers program is perfect for campers looking to take their survival skills to the next level, gaining confidence and independence while fully immersed in the beauty and challenges of the wilderness.
Connecting Through Nature: Exploration, Experience, and Growth
At Camp W, everything we do is rooted in the natural world. We immerse ourselves in all weather and all seasons, witnessing firsthand how plants, animals, and even we humans change and adapt as the Earth turns.
Belonging and Curiosity
We believe that when people feel connected to the world around them and learn to ask meaningful questions, they gain the tools to feel at home in any environment. This sense of belonging fosters curiosity and confidence that campers carry with them long after their time at Camp W.
A Balance of Structure and Freedom
While our experienced instructor teams design unique themes for each session and carefully plan daily activities, our approach is also deeply student-centered. We embrace the spontaneous teachings of the earth and encourage participants to:
• Follow their individual interests.
• Share their passions with the group.
• Explore the group’s focus for the day with curiosity and openness.
A Typical Day at Camp W
A day at Camp W offers a rich blend of structure and unstructured exploration, including:
• Epic Games: Team-based adventures that inspire collaboration and fun.
• Quiet Reflection: Time at a personal “sit spot” to observe, connect, and reflect.
• Primitive Skills: Making fires, identifying what’s changed in the environment, and honing survival techniques.
• Unstructured Free Play: Opportunities to explore and engage with the natural world on their own terms.
Empowerment Through Skill Mastery
There’s a unique freedom and confidence that comes from learning to thrive in nature using only the materials provided by the environment. Campers develop fundamental skills not just for surviving but truly flourishing in the wilderness.
Primitive Skills We Explore:
• Fire building and tending.
• Shelter construction using natural materials.
• Identifying edible plants and foraging safely.
• Navigating landscapes without maps or compasses.
• Developing awareness of subtle changes in the environment and within themselves.
Transforming Your Relationship with Nature
How might you feel differently in the landscape once you’ve mastered these skills? At Camp W, these experiences aren’t just lessons—they are transformative moments that deepen your connection to the world and yourself.
SHELTERS
Find one or build one for survival, concealment, wilderness living or just plain fun. Shelters are home base for any survival situation and are great containers for exploration, growth and sharing.
DRINKING WATER
Finding water is a top priority in the wild. Humans can survive only a few days without water. We explore many ways of finding and purifying this precious commodity.
MAKING FIRE
Mastering the art and science of creating fire with raw materials gathered from the land. Building smokeless fires in all types of weather, and forming habits of fire safety. Beyond rubbing two sticks together, fire making provides an experiential learning platform for tree identification, resource extraction, ecology, physics, body mechanics, teamwork & more.
WILDERNESS COOKING
Where wilderness survival becomes outdoor recreation! There's no better way to tame the uncertainties of life than to cook your meals healthfully over a fire without pots or other modern amenities.
WILDCRAFTING
Gathering foods from the wild, learning how to identify plants, understanding invasive species ecology and native species regeneration, plant taxonomy, and of course - eating your vegetables! Learning these concepts under the magical invisibility cloak of FUN is education at it's best.
NATURAL NAVIGATION
Knowing how NOT to get lost, how to to find your way and feel at home no matter where you're going. Does moss really grow on the north side of a tree? No compass, no smart phone... no problem!
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Perhaps one of the most overlooked survival skills! Knowing how to see and identify the things that can bring you harm and get you into real trouble is, in fact, where we often begin; not to frighten, but to empower one to explore the world safely.
TRACKING
By learning to understand the marks made by every living thing, we connect to the oldest science ever practiced by humans, tracking! Tracking is the art of reading the landscape, it gives us a window into the mind of what we track, and through that window we gain a greater appreciation for and understanding of the world around us.
TOOL CRAFTING
The hallmarks of cultures are the technologies derived from the landscapes around them. It is by re-inventing the wheels of our past that we come to know who we are. Whether by hunting, gathering or just creating comfort in the wild, we learn to solve life's challenges by crafting tools from the raw materials we've gathered with our own hands. Including pottery and blacksmithing.
ANCIENT WEAPONRY
Atlatl, Bola, Axes, Spears, Snares, Traps, Archery, Clout, Knives, Slingshots, Catapults, are some of the many tools of the past used to catch, hunt, or defend. We bring these simple yet effective tools back to life, some are even made in program!
JOURNALING
Journals are an essential part of our studies. Our approach to journaling combines the land of a serious academic examination and an artistic exploration of the subject. The process of journaling in this manner is a great aid in learning to identify plants, trees, birds and animals and their tracks. This is a way to help develop a “minds eye”, creating visual images to aid reflection.
CHOICE ACTIVITIES
In addition to all the amazing activities above we also have “choice activities” the campers pick each day like arts & crafts, boating, swimming in our pool, reading or relaxing time at "hammock city", solving routes on our climbing wall, fishing, dancing, yoga, archery, gardening, music, card games, theater, pottery, weaving, and so many other awesome choice activities.
